Section titled “The guide”Zigbee is the local radio connector for bulbs, plugs, meters, locks, and sensors. It does not use cloud account setup or typed credentials: the household opens the network for a short pairing window, puts a device into pairing mode, and it joins. For developers, this connector exposes device state, controls for supported devices, and join events through the local platform, and it keeps working when the cloud is down. For households, only the devices supported by the brand guides appear, and a device that already belongs to another hub must be reset first.
How it connects
Section titled “How it connects”connect uses discover, so there is nothing to type. The add flow opens a pairing window on the Zigbee network for 120 seconds. During that time, the user picks a brand and follows the reset or pairing steps shown in the UI. New devices that have never been on a hub often join without a reset while the window is open.
This connector is local-only. The house keeps working if the cloud is unavailable, because the radio stays on the property. A DEV key is limited to the sandbox, while a LIVE key only works for its own connector.
What it exposes
Section titled “What it exposes”Zigbee brings light, switch, and sensor into ALYT.
Devices publish their last retained state through the connector. A light exposes brightness and, where supported by the device, color temperature and color. A switch or bare state appears as a switch. Sensors expose one reading per supported measurement, such as temperature, humidity, occupancy, contact, water leak, smoke, carbon monoxide, illuminance, CO2, VOC, PM2.5, and battery.
The connector also reports battery state as level and low status where available.
Controls
Section titled “Controls”Supported lights and other actuators accept control writes through the connector. For a light, that includes power and brightness, and where the device supports it, color temperature and color. A lock expose maps to lock controls. Some devices only support a subset of those actions, and unsupported controls do not appear as working options.
Events
Section titled “Events”The household sees devices appear when the radio hears them joining. The pairing window is open only while the add sheet is open, and devices can show up under “Joining now” before they land in their room.
What cannot be done
Section titled “What cannot be done”Zigbee groups, scenes, and binding are not used here. The connector does not provide OTA device updates through ALYT. Multi-gang switches are not fully split into one thing per gang. The console’s raw Zigbee frontend is off.
What the household needs
Section titled “What the household needs”The add sheet shows the steps for the brand being paired. Common cases include:
- Philips Hue bulbs: a 6-character code printed on the bulb, or a reset procedure if the bulb was already on another hub.
- Kwikset SmartCode locks: the door stays open, and the lock is reset or paired with its inside button sequence.
- GE and Enbrighten switches, dimmers, plugs, and outlets: a brand-specific reset gesture before pairing if the device belonged to another hub.
A device that is already joined to another hub stays there until it is reset.
What to check when it fails
Section titled “What to check when it fails”If a device does not appear, check that the pairing window is open and that the device is actually in pairing mode. If a device belonged to another hub, reset it first. If a device joins but does not show the expected state, refresh it once the join is complete; newly joined devices can need a read after interview.
If the connector stops seeing devices after a recovery or migration, the Zigbee network data must still be present. Losing that data means the household has to pair devices again, although the radio itself remains.
If a supported brand still does not work, check whether the device model is one of the listed supported variants for that brand and whether it needs a reset step before pairing.
